Back when I had my first son, who is now 34, the rule at the hospital where
he was born was that babies got a "test feed" of water, followed by NOTHING
AT ALL for the first 12 hours. They were then allowed to feed for 2 minutes
on each breast every 4 hours. This, by the way, was considered a step up
from the previous protocol where the babies had NOTHING for 24 hours, before
starting the 2 minutes per side for 4 hours routine.

The nurses told me my baby would DIE or at least I would have very, very
sore nipples because I insisted (having done my own research) that I would
breastfeed my baby on demand from birth.

But I always keep this in mind when someone is in a panic because a newborn
hasn't nursed for 4 hours or 6 hours or even 12 hours.
