A theory cannot be proven, only be falsified. A theory is taken for granted
as long as it within the borders of scientific reasoning, doesn't say
nonsense according to the current scientific paradigm and hasn't been
falsified. Why it cannot be proven can be explained by the following
formula (no, not ABM :) ) :
if a theory A, then should B occur.
B occurs
-----------------------
theory A has been affirmated, but not proven because there can be
another factor than could have caused B; the alternative explanation.
OTOH:
if A, then B
B doesn't occur
------------------------
A is falsified
A good (scientific) theory is a theory that is formulated in
terms that it can be falsified. (the above according to K. Popper, in my
own words).
This is my first post to LactNet. I hope to introduce myself soon.
