In reply to Heather,

Have you got a week??!!

I work in a BFHI facility. We got accreditation last year along with 6
rural primary facilities. It almost put me in therapy!!

I would recommend the Australian video "Breastfeeding success -
Achieving Baby Friendly Accreditation" (I have no financial interest) as
a starter for your staff. In that video they will state - "start with
your breastfeeding policy". We underestimated how much work forming the
policy would be and how integral it was to the whole process. It can be
accessed through the Australian College of Midwives (sorry, I do not
have the link).

In hindsight, I feel any unit needs a 3 year plan to achieve BFHI. I
feel it takes that long to get all the staff through the education, for
the staff to adapt to the new information and for practise to slowly
start changing. Also involving the quality and risk team helped
enormously. They are experienced with managing audits and planning.

70% of New Zealand maternity facilities are now BFHI accredited. BFHi
is administered here by The New Zealand Breastfeeding Authority (NZBA).
www.babyfriendly.org.nz. There may be some useful information there for
you.

Good luck. It can be a lonely journey at times so take good care of
yourself and set up your support networks.

Hello,
I am employed as a lactation consultant at a hospital that has had a
certificate of intent to become baby friendly since about 2005. I am
very
curious if anyone on this list works for a baby friendly facility, I
would love to
speak with someone about how they overcame barriers, and any other
information you can provide.
Thanks so much!
Heather LaRosa
