Dear Friends:

Wendy K asks about the mother who had no changes and no milk for the first
baby and is noticing leaking during pregnancy with the second baby.

Hurray for physiology....each pregnancy exerts changes in the breasts, as do
menstrual cycles. So more ducts grow, more glandular tissue develops and a
mother has a clean slate for the new arrival. I know nothing about the use
of herbs in pregnancy.

My suggestion is that this mother aim for an unmedicated, spontaneous labor
with immediate s2s and unrestricted nursing. She could spend her pregnancy
setting up a support network to care for the older child, do housework
(shopping, cleaning, cooking and laundry) for the first week (at a minimum,
although longer would be better). Then she could lie around s2s with baby #2
and pretend to be a placenta and breastfeed ad libitum. Watch for the baby's
poop color changes (maybe get a weight check) have people around to love and
praise her and bring her flowers, and watch to see what happens.

I have had clients who had dismal and dry nursing experiences with a first
baby, only to make plenty of milk the second time around!

warmly,
