I realize the huge POTENTIAL for conflict of interest when nutrition
researchers use formula money, but Richard Schanler MD and Alan Lucas MD are
two of the most intellectually honest researchers and human beings I have had
the honor to know. Formula money or not, they have both contributed
enormously to the field and have helped me help my patients. I would love it
if we could individually engineer each mother's milk to meet the specific
needs of her preterm infant - some day we will. In the meantime, we all do
the best with what we have.
