hi Pam,
You sure did a great job portraying what life is like for us hospital LCs,
we run here, there and everywhere, don't we? I also like your approach to
the parents wanting to change peds, rather than making an enemy out of this
ped for the parents and potentially for yourself as well, you gave everyone
the opportunity to learn and grow together. Bravo! and you are so right,
it is particularly frustrating when they DON'T call an LC where we could
have made a difference.

Subject: HepC Ped and the staff.

I think after the Holidays I need to get approval to get into more of our
Pediatrician offices and try to do a little education. Yesterday I found a
Mom, ready to go home, who had been told NOT to breastfeed due to Hep C.
She
was told by the nursery nurse and the Ped backed her up. Well, thank
goodness I found all of this out (we have 43 Post Partum rooms, 12 LDR
rooms,
we run to Peds, Peds ER, ER, see readmits on other floors, ICU Moms,OR
patients, NICU moms, etc....so we can't see everyone, unfortunately). I was
very fortunate that the Ped walked onto the unit as I discovered all of
this!
I quickly got my Lawrence book, etc. Suggested he buy it for his practice
and quickly ran into the room to help this mother! Who was from a
breastfeeding culture and THRILLED to find out she could nurse!!! Dad was
upset about the misinformation they received and he wanted to switch
practices. I quickly put the fire out on that. I told him the Ped is a
great Medical Doctor but as most Doctors he learned little to nothing in Med
school about it and it would do his practice a grave disservice if they left
it. I explained that the best teachers some Pediatricians have are their
patients. It may come in baby steps but if they have strong parents who
keep
up the breastfeeding and tell them they will keep in touch with Lactation
Consultants some of the Doctors do learn. This pediatrician is a dear,
sweet
man, and he was very happy to learn it was ok to nurse. (Unfortunately,
later in the day a mom called to say her Ped (this same Doctor) had her sign
a consent she was putting chemicals into her child by insisting on nystatin
for the baby when he didn't see signs of thrush but yet she insisted because
she is being treated for thrush herself.....gee....I wonder if he has them
sign consents for formula use?? I WILL get him some info to share and talk
to him a little bit about this later. I don't think he will be offended, at
least I hope not. Anyway, too bad if he is. He will get over it.)

Now, to vent. Why did NO ONE, not one nurse or the Pediatrician contact any
of the 4 LC's we have on staff?? They all have our extensions, hospital
cell
phone #, and beeper numbers. This is where I just had to blow off steam
with
one of the nurses who I dearly love. We are the experts and NOT ONE person
thought to call us?? Drives me crazy! Thank goodness the baby latched on.
But ONE feeding before they walked out of our doors. A baby who has been
getting 30-45 ml of formula. I know they will call. These people want to
be
successful. I,did lots of teaching with them.

If cloning ever becomes legal, watch out Jay Gordon, Jack Newman, William
Sears, Nancy Wight, el al!
