I have been asked on another list if women *not* in the West suffer as much
from sore nipples.

I answered that as far as I could tell from reading and talking to people,
that the 'so-common-it's almost-normal' thing of sore nipples is not an
issue elsewhere. Why? Because, I speculated, elsewhere mothers and babies
are less likely to be given stuff like pethedine or diamorphine which
zonks the baby, and makes it harder for him/her to perk up and be alert
enough to *open wide* and get latched. There is far less messing about with
bf - no one shoving the baby's head on or trying to slot the nipple in. And
mothers and babies are more likely to be together all the time, so they
just learn in a gentle, unpressured way. Women have seen bf all their
lives and it is not so much of a 'production number' ....

Any thoughts?
