I was wondering if anybody could offer me some advice as to how to help a
baby stop chomping at the breast. I cannot think of a better way to
describe it. This baby was born at 3.450 after a very difficult birth.
The baby is now three weeks. The mother has already had mastitis one time.
She has just weighed the baby from 2 weeks to three weeks and the baby has
lost 10 grams. She said the baby is basically settled except for at night.
The baby has made about 2 BM's every day besides for 2 days that she
didn't. The mother is EXTREMELY frustrated, and I feel she is very much at
the end of her rope, therefore I am kind of walking on eggshells in terms
of what I suggest to her. I think the baby's suck is the problem- too much
lower jaw movement and the lips seem to be very pursed to me.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jessica Billowitz, IBCLC
