Dear Lactnet Friends:

I had the privilege of working for a perinatal homecare agency for 2 years,
visiting new mothers at home in the first week postpartum.

During those visits, I saw more lousy latches than correct ones. Except
that mom was happy, pain-free, and baby was gaining weight.

Those mothers taught me that all the details of attachment that we've been
taught about breastfeeding are only useful when things aren't going right.

New breastfeeding workers are taught the "correct attachment". . and try to
make mothers fit this mold. Most of the time, it isn't necessary. But how
would one know that without experience.

The focus on "perfect" attachment in the hospital actually undermines
confidence. Mothers worry that they are doing it right.

When we aren't comfortable during sleep, we squirm and wriggle to get
comfortable. We don't need a sleep specialist or a class to figure it out;
we go by how it feels. This is what mothers need to learn.

warmly,
