The hospital where I work has the Hollister pumps that has been there for
years. Recently we have had several mothers who reported that the pumps
surges when they used them. We took a couple down to BioMed who told us that
when that pump ( The Heavy duty Hollister) is on high, the cycles drop to
about 25-30cycles per minute. The BioMed technician recommended that we place
a sticker on the pump warning moms not to use above medium. I was not happy
with that and asked him to notify MedWatch. Don't know if that happened.
Medela is the only company who's sole source of income is derived from babies
breastfeeding sucessfully. They have a large research department and patient
education materials. They also are the only company with the complete line of
alternative feeding devices.
You may also need to check to see if your hospital is in a buying program.
Ordering from a pump company that is not in the contracted services may mean
you have to pay higher prices.
If you have a chance to attend a Pump Technology Workshop, do so. It provdes
you with alot of information on how pumps work, and then they have all the
types of pumps so you can walk around in small groups and test pressure
ranges, cycling ranges, ease of assembly etc. It is a great workshop and very
enlighting.
