"So, at the hospital we are being visited by
JCAHO. Yesterday was the unit-based walkthrough by the nurse and her big
emphasis evolved around how the nurses are conducting a nutritional
assessment on admission to the OB dept. and then what criteria is used to
alert for a dietary consult because this is going to be A LACTATING WOMAN!
This examiner was strongly emphasizing the nutritional aspect of supporting
lactation and used this example for conveying the need for interdisciplinary
plans of care. So, I wanted to alert those LC's functioning as
hospital-based practices to be aware that lactation is emphasized by at
least one examiner from JCAHO."

Am I too cynical by far, or do other LactNetters also get a strange feeling
when you read the above? As in "Gee, lactation is such a strain on a
woman's body that she requires a specialized diet, and a consult from a
nutritionist in order to be successful." To me, this smacks of making
breastfeeding sound difficult, unusual, and not possible or not advisable if
you don't follow the guidelines provided by a nutritionist. One has to
wonder how all those women have been able to breastfeed while just eating
whatever was available -- like millet and sorghum in Mali.

Kathy Dettwyler, getting old and crotchety, and seeing anti-breastfeeding
messages everywhere
