With all due respect, the Health team offerings are only a day and a
half. This is not cost effective for me to go across the country. For this
distance, I ususally only attend conferences that are at least 3 days. Not
only that , but the presentations are not all offered. We will miss out
on lectures such as those presented by Dr's O'Hara, Derma, Meek, Powers
and others presenting topics such as "Guilt and BF, Cultural Influences,
Adolescent Population , Supporting families via a Lactation Program, "
etc.
I would gladly take a " gag order" to attend these sessions. My desire
to attend is not to critique but to learn. I am responsible for providing
the physician education related to breastfeeding for not only staff
physicians but residents and medical students. I also am an elective
rotation for a couple of the residency programs. While I would love for
all of them to attend the ABM conferences, most can't or won't. I just
want to insure that not only am I presenting my classes with the latest
medical information but also in a manner that supports physician learning.
The Thursday offerings for "what every Dr. Should Know About
Breastfeeding" classes are of benefit to me to see what other physicians
question as they learn so that I can assess the learning modes for my
groups. No one should ever be shy to ask questions- if we don't ask, we
don't learn. Thats why I ask the ABM to reconcider their current
restrictions.
