My advice would be to write to your current agency and ask them. Then save their reply. If they say you can throw out the records, you've got written confirmation of that in case of any further problems.

Also, if you want to save space, you could always scan papers in and save them electronically (although I agree that the thought of doing that for years' worth of records is daunting!).
