Dear friends,
In January 2012, Maria Parlapiano (New Jersey, USA) and I started a
letter writing and media campaign and petition
(http://www.change.org/petitions/stop-newark-nestle-now) to try to stop
the Mayor of Newark and the Governor of Michigan from accepting Nestle's
offer of money and their personally trained nutritionists in exchange
for the "right" to "educate" about infant feeding "in hospitals, medical
schools and the community". Many of you supported our efforts.
The campaign was an excellent educational tool but it did not stop the
Mayor or Governor. At that time Nestle said they planned to take their
program across the US. Several LC's on Lactnet indicated they had heard
of negotiations in their cities and states about what Nestle was
offering but when questioned further they were not willing or unable to
speak out.
I have not been active on Lactnet since the middle of January 2012 but
have read every post. I have not seen anyone post about Nestle's
"educational" programs. What is happening in the city of Newark and the
State of Michigan? Is Nestle's program also in other cities and states?
Below is a directive just released from the US Breastfeeding Committee.
This directive can be a model for other countries. Please use it and let
the rest of us know what is happening in your area.
