Hello everyone and congratulations to all who passed the IBCLE!! I need to
tap into your expert minds once
again :). I just received a call from the hospital where I work about a mom
who is nursing a three month old.
This lady is scheduled for an endoscopy on Monday and an exploratory
laparoscopy on Tuesday due to suspected
gall bladder disease. The RN who called me said that the mother was told she
needed to pump and dump her milk because of the contrast medium being used.
Unfortunately no one seems to know what type of medium is to be used. All I
have is the info presented in my old med-surg text which describes a
cholecystogram being done to diagnose this problem which is different from
an endo or lap. Has anybody worked with a mom with gall bladder disease? Are
most contrast media (obviously not radioactive) safe with breastfeeding? I`m
sorry I don`t have more details, but any advice would be helpful!

TIA, Lisa Logan RNC,IBCLC
