Dear Magda and all,
Many of the inner-city patients I serve use lots of abm. Of course
I would like to see more exclusive breastfeeding!! We designed our LC
program for one of us to make a teaching/assessment/introductory visit
with every breastfeeding mother who delivers at our hospital. Part of my
routine teaching includes saying 'it is best to only or mostly
breastfeed the first month to promote a plentiful milk supply and for
baby to learn to breastfeed well before giving bottles. There are lots
of options and some mothers combine bottles with breastfeeding.' Of
course I hope they ONLY breastfeed that first month and indeed beyond!
(Such as the first 2-3 years)
I have come to understand this is a very foreign concept to much
of the population I serve, and I need to meet them where they are, and
promote feelings of good mothering, and give praise for ANY breastfeeding
that is done. I'm hoping the moms will love it as much as babies do once
they have done it for a few weeks.
Hope this helps. This will sound like a terrible compromise to
some of you...........such as Carol B! I really do appreciate your
stance, Carol, and it is needed to balance us all.

We 'did' the state fair today with our 3 kids, neither my dh or
myself wanted to take the kids alone, so we both took days off from work!
Guess compromises are a part of life.
