I have just been speaking to a mother whose child (nearly two years
old) has just had his tonsils and adenoids removed. Apparently the doctor
has told her the child should not suck for at least a week - bottle, dummy,
straw, or breast - as this might prevent or otherwise disturb the formation
of scar tissue. In the meantime, he is on a semi-liquid diet, i.e. he can
eat things like yoghurt, ice-cream etc.
        I assume there is probably no reason why this baby should not feed
at the breast, especially as breastfed babies do not suck in the same way as
they would at a bottle teat.
        Has anyone ever heard of such a thing? Does anyone know of a child
who had had these operations and was able to feed at the breast?
        Please reply quickly, as the baby has already had the operation, and
the mother is now struggling to keep him calm without breastfeeding.
