I am seeing about 15 to 30 new moms per day at 3-5 days post partum. The ones
that are having no problems breastfeeding are usually second time mothers who
haven't given the baby any bottles.
The vast majority of what I am seeing is in mothers who
1. Baby got a bottle feeding first
2. Baby has been supplemented in the hospital.
Problems range from sore nipples, to flow preference, to babies who can't
feel the soft breast nipple and bob all over rather than latch on, to the
most horrific engorgement I have seen in my whole career!!
The loss of moms confidence in her ability to produce milk is so hard to deal
with. What do you say to a mom who "knows" the baby only settles and goes to
sleep when she gives a bottle?
Yes, there are a few who seem to do all of the above and have no problems but
they are few and far between.
