We had a sort of discussion in Norwegian mass media about this last year, with a professor of dentistry claiming night feeds were a major cause of tooth decay in toddlers. (We were impressed that she thought there were so many people giving their toddlers night breastfeeds!) The conclusion was something along the lines of "It is important to brush the child's teeth carefully before bedtime, so that there are no food remains which can be a hotbed of decay when "fertilized" with fresh breast milk. If the child's mouth is clean, BF on demand at night doesn't seem to be a problem for teeth.
greetings from Rachel
whose first child nursed a lot at night until the age of 19-20 months, has never ever used toothpaste, and has never had a cavity. (She is 18 years old now, so there!)
