lanolin and gel pads - may use together or not?

I am not a fan of lanolin but just a general question, as this came up in
discussion at work, and I am finding conflicting info on some blogs.
Lansinoh site says no need to  use together but also no harm. Other sites
(blogs) participants say the lanolin breaks down the gel too fast, and I've
also heard using them together causes skin breakdown?
