Debbie:

there were two studies by M. Woolridge - in the firs he used the "mexican
hat" and had "substancial decrease in milk output. The second study he used a
latex sheild that was developed as a component in a process for measing milk
flow and composition. This is the study that shoed a 22% decrease which M.
Woolridge did not consider significant.

That same year Lusas and his collegues reported on 10 mothers using a
modifeid latex shled and confirmed Woolridge's finding.

In 1985 William compared two methods of milk sampling> his study had 30
mothers. They used a totally differnt shiiled and found a 40% reduction in
intake - however when adjusted it was only 17% less.

Again in '85 Amatayakul looked at serum and cortisol levels after sucking
and the effect of a nipple shield. They used the sield that was commercially
available and used in Woolridge's 1980 study - the mexican hat! 16 women used
the shield - there was no significant difference in prolactin or cortisol
levels. ther was no effect on time spent at the breast or suckling patter.
there was howerver a significant difference in milk transfer - 27vs 47 grams.

In Auerbachs; study she used two different nipple shields to see if they
would inflience the amount of milk obtained while pumping. she used the
mexican hat and an adapted version of that one. There were 25 mother's in
sthis study. She found a decrease in pumped milk.

Please note that seldom is the same shield used in two studies. The sheilds
used are not the silicone ones available to use now. AND most important from
my perspective ALL of these mother's were bf without problems.... A very
different mindset than the mother's we are using them with who are haveing
difficulties.

Again for a more complete review of these studies see Birth Issues Vol 7/
No. 2 1998.
