Gripe water is given routinely by many mothers to their babies. The product being discussed on Lactnet is primarily herbal--no alcohol (although begs the question: what is exclusivity of breastfeeding and secondly: why are these babies so "colicky"), but the product used by many moms I have worked with contained a lot of alcohol. I would suggest that any LC who is asked about gripe water be sure to ask the mom which product she is using. Perhaps moms who are culturally  familiar with gripe water would be willing to switch to the newer formula if offered the alternative.
