To shake or not to shake? I am reading conflicting information all over
the place. This first came up on Nestle's website, to which I sent an
email asking them to please udate their information. They replied asking
for a reference for my statement. I sent them this source (thanks to
Brenda Phipps on Lactnet): The Human Milk Bank Association -Third Edition
entitled, "Recommendations for Collection, Storage and Handling of a
Mother's Milk for her Own Infant in the Hospital Setting",
page 16.

I also checked LLL's website for a reference to send to Nestle, and the
gazillion other websites I have found to have misinformation concerning
breastfeeding and caring for human milk (including many hospital websites,
and other health-related sites). And there it is in black and white on the
LLL site, "Shake before testing the temperature. Shaking will also
redistribute the cream into the milk."
http://www.lalecheleague.org/FAQ/milkstorage.html

Now there is a difference between gently shaking and vigorously shaking,
but to most people, a shake is a shake. Swirling, on the other hand, is a
more concise description of how human milk should be handled, according to
the source above from the HMBA.

So, across the board we are seeing inconsistancies, even among the
breastfeeding experts.

Any thoughts? Btw, I have been in contact with LLL about this quote on
their website.

Megan
