Hi all,

I just read this information today regarding safe handling of breast
milk. It was in my "Leaven", LaLeche League's publication for leaders,
Volume 32, Number 5, October-November 1996. "..., Director of the
Center for Breastfeeding Information at LLLI Headquarters contacted
both the Federal Ocupational Saftey and Health Adimnistration(OSHA),
and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for clarification [re:
handling EBM]. She learned that homan milk is not and never has been
under universal precautions." It goes on to say that the "American
Academy of Pediatrics and the American Public Health Association place
no restrictions on handling human milk other than proper hand washing
and standard refrigeration protocols." The references for the article
are: Simonds, R. and Chanock, S. Medical issues related to caring for
human immunodeficiency virus-infected children in and out of the home.
"Pediatr Infec Dis J" 1993; 12:845-52, and American Public Health
Association and American Academy of Pediatrics; Maternal Child Health
Bureau. "Caring for our Children: National Health and Saftey
Performancd Standards: Grudelines for Out of Home Child Care
Programs." 1992.
Hope this is helpful.
