Dear Ms. Lara,

I'm certain that you have received more that a few missives about your
article.

Thank you for raising the topic. If in fact there are rude unintelligent
people verbally abusing mothers who bottlefeed their babies in public, they
deserve all of our scorn. This must a very rare occurrence and barely merits
mention. There are fools of all stripes wandering the streets.

I fear that this oversimplifies the matter and shifts the discussion away
from the real issue of why so many women get less support than they need in
their efforts to nurse their babies. The data about decreased infants'
health and increased mortality are solid and not the subject of medical
debate. Infants get sick and die because doctors, hospital staff and others
do not help mothers learn to breastfeed well

Might I suggest that you have a look at the complicated financial
relationships among the manufacturers of infant formula and the doctors and
administrators who run your area's hospitals. A Pulitzer could be yours.

Best,

Jay Gordon, MD, FAAP, IBCLC
