Rose,
I have a couple of possible articles for you:

Eaton J, 1991, Suppressing Lactation, Nursing Times 87(18): 27-30
(Mentions comparisons of methods of suppressing lactation, including
binders - not as effective as other methods)

Shrivastav P et al, 1989, Suppression of Puerperal Lactation Using Jasmine
Flowers (Jasminum sambac), BF Review 1(14):43-45
(Mentions binders in introduction, and says they are unacceptable - gives a
reference to this statement: Schwartz, et al 1973 'A clinical study of
lactation suppression' Obstet Gynecol 42:599. I haven't got this one)

McGee ML, 1992, Abrupt Weaning: Is Breast-Binding Effective? (Letter), J
Hum Lact 8(3): 126
(This actually asks the same question as you have, and comments that there
is no back-up evidence to support the pracice even though it appears in
books)
