In recent comments about the safety of refreezing breastmilk, a couple of people have referenced this study: Rechtman DJ, Lee ML and Berg H. Effect of environmental conditions on unpasteurized donor human milk. Breastfeeding Medicine. Spring, 2006; 1(1): 24-26. In my role as the Professional Liaison Research Associate for the La Leche League Alliance Area Network (formerly the Eastern US Division of LLLI), I have discussed this topic with Melissa Vickers, IBCLC and Betty Crase, IBCLC. Betty, along with Dr. Anne Eglash, co-authored La Leche League's revised guidelines for breastmilk storage (see http://www.llli.org/faq/milkstorage.html for an overview). When the topic of the Rechtman study came up on the email list for Professional Liaision La Leche League Leaders, Betty contacted Dr. Rechtman to ask a few questions about the study. Dr. Rechtman, current Chief Medical Officer at Prolacta Bioscience, shared the following:

1) There were only one or two staff milk donors lactating at the time, not intended to be representative of US or Western European donors; (2) the type/stage of lactation of the milk they were donating was not recorded and was not important to the researchers; 3) there were no personal hygienic practices required before pumping, the equipment was not sterilized, and the donors stored their milk in their own freezers up to two months at -20C; and 4) the study was specific/intended/important only to proposed Prolacta operations
