The breastfeeding books supplied by Abbott represent a conflict of
interest. This type of sponsorship is a marketing tactic used by formula
companies to whitewash their image and place their name and logo in front
of new mothers. It helps formula companies insinuate themselves into the
corporate culture of the hospital and gain access to patients in order to
sell their product. There are plenty of good breastfeeding educational
materials that can be given to mothers which do not carry formula company
messages. One more tactic that targets new mothers to purchase brand name
products. Hospitals should promote health and nothing else.
