Regarding swings and other various contraptions, used sometimes for stashing
babies for long periods of time, decreasing their Bf opportunities, see
Sunday Washington Post:

LIFE IS SHORT | Autobiography as Haiku

Sunday, January 19, 2003; Page F01
Everything I never knew I needed to know about pregnancy and infants is in
the stack of books my wife accumulated when she became pregnant. Everything
except how, when and why to use the windup, spring-loaded and
battery-operated contraptions that soon littered our house. There's the
vibrating chair, the swingy chair, the bouncy chair and the saucer. Little by
little we figured out when bouncing was preferable to swinging, as well as
discerning its real purpose. One day a friend and seasoned father came to
visit, saying, "You've got all the right gadgets. . . . We call them
neglect-o-matics." Our secret was out.Chris Ullman>>
