Hi Friends,
My understanding from various sources including a talk by P. Hartman, et al is that the baby's intake should be 2.5X weight /24hrs. until baby weighs 10 pounds. (With babies weighing 10 pounds or other large amounts at birth this would be valid after about one week) At that point baby needs about 25 ounces/ 24 hours and this is the amount a baby will grow and thrive on until need for "complimentary feeds around the middle of the first year." Formula fed babies, by contrast, need to increase # of ounces taken daily by weight, leading to those large bottles so ubiquitous in American society. Breastfeeding moms often wonder when they are going to have to fill one of those. I am regularly assuring them they don't have to pump 8 oz at each session.
