Hi Everybody:
There have been a lot of posts lately about how many hours a newborn can
safely go before nursing. Please don't forget kangaroo care, or skin-to-skin
contact as a way to promote early nursing. If the mother and baby are not
together intimately, it will take longer to get them nursing.
So much of what is being discussed seems to revolve around how the baby can
be made to fit into hospital expectations. Each dyad is individual. If birth
has been medicated and/or traumatic, it may take longer as the couple have to
recover. Skin-to-skin care is the best way to promote healing. Read Dr. Susan
Ludington's work for details. Skin-to-skin is great for everybody, not only
premature infants. Warmly, Nikki
