Kathy,

a word of caution. I think the concern you have is that the clinicc
was judging this young woman. Be careful that your response
addresses the sentiment. I'm not certain that you can always count
on the media to get the exact words used by the clinician. neither
am i certain that the sentiment will be attributed to the correct
party.

how about this for a strategy? Do respond to the paper that you are
concerned. Don't "flame"....teach. Teach why a young woman might be
disinclined to seek care. Teach society the way it contributes to
these disincentives. Teach the implications of this problem on a
large scale. And teach why an adolescent needs a very special
approach to care. If you can....give an example of a young woman in
your care who was a star.... the type society would like all youth to
be.

While we are too often justifiably frustrated with media
representation of our work and social problems, flaming does nothing
to promote our purposes or future coverage. A thoughtful and mature
response may invite the writer to seek you out and perhaps do a
companion piece.

Just food for thought.

Mary

....recently misquoted in a piece but the overall impact was quite
positive.
