Crystal and all,
I believe that the reason LAM is not being taught to women is that many
health educators -- certainly not limited to any professional or
demographical category, and including mil's -- believe that women do not
want to adopt the kind of life-style that is necessary for it to be
successful... their terminology, not mine. It is also linked to
attitudes that are associated with breastfeeding... you can't sell LAM
or breastfeeding, but their alternatives are good money-makers, and some
would claim that chemicals are more conducive to maintaining the health
status of mothers and babies than more natural approaches that are
harder to control. You will see discussion of the effectiveness of LAM,
and the importance of recognizing it as an alternative to other
contraceptive methods, in Lactnet archives and in LLL literature.
Actually, I think I'll go and offer a seminar at Planned Parenthood...
bet people will be surprised by how much interest there really is in
this method. (OTOH, nobody takes me seriously when I talk about family
planning; don't know why LOL)
Jo-Anne
