I remember a number of years ago hearing one of the LLLI Medical Advisors (I
think it might have been Herb Ratner) make the comment that "If crying is
good for the lungs, then bleeding is good for the veins!"

I also heard some time ago a great way to explain to moms especially why not
let a baby "cry it out". It went something like this:

Imagine your washing machine begins to overflow. You try everything you
know to stop it, but to no avail. You frantically tell you husband about
the problem, but he just says "OK, I'll look at it." and goes on reading his
paper, watching the game or whatever. You try again to fix the problem
yourself, but by now the floor is totally flooded and the water is spreading
to the next room. You tell your husband about it even more urgently and are
either ignored or he brushes it off again. This continues with you getting
more frantic with each request for help. Eventually you just give up. How
would this make you feel? You might even begin to doubt your perception of
the problem. The more this happens, the less you trust both your own view
of the world and your husband's love for you.

Isn't this somewhat how a baby probably reacts when we ignore his urgent
pleas for help in making whatever is bothering him right?

Winnie
