HOUSTON (Jan. 11, 1999), 12 noon USA CST -- For the first time since
their birth on Dec. 8 and 20, Nkem Chukwu is able to hold one of her babies.
Jioke, the youngest boy who is now the largest octuplet at 2 pounds, was the
first octuplet to be held by Chukwu early today.

All seven of the surviving octuplets remain in critical but stable condition at
Texas Children's Hospital's neonatal intensive care unit.
Attending Neonatologist Dr. Carol Lynn Berseth also announced that Chima is
now on antibiotics for an infection. Chima's sister Chidi was placed on
antibiotics Friday for an infection. She is still taking external intravenous
feedings.

Ebuka, Echera, Ikem, Jioke and Gorom are all still receiving breast milk in
addition to their regular intravenous feedings.
