In any aspect of daily life we may experience something or someone doing
less than what we see as optimal or even supportive. If there was one magic
instant way to meet every goal , wouldn't it be wonderful. Good things
never get mentioned as much as a "bad" thing or experience. We face this
daily even when supporting our breastfeeding families. I can recount tons of
horror stories I've heard from families etc. on misinformation and poor
care they have experienced at the hands of fellow breastfeeding supporters
and dealt with the aftermath of some militant supporters who did not
understand how to adjust for medical issues.. But it would be unfair and
continue this form of hate mongering to brush the whole lactation community
because of the actions of a few.

There has been a bit of "us against them" mentality lately when discussing
the medical community. I think this has damaged our goals and
interactions-especially when we paint a whole group with the same brush .
Yet some of our greatest supporters and researchers in making change come
from this branch and negating their valuable input to just sucking down
paychecks is and will always be a slap in the face.
And it might surprise many of you on how many medical folks have also been
in the shoes as a NICU parent and why we chose this field. Despite this, no
one has any special corner on understanding what these families go through
because each story is different, with each baby and family, in each case, in
each study, in each book, in each hospital, in each country, in each day and
time.

I think that broad based bashing of anyone or group ( excluding IMHO the
formula companies :) has no productive place within the LACTNET community.
I hope to see everyone, including myself, just take a deep breath, drop the
us verses them mentality trend and get back to the goal of working together
on ways to continue to promote positive change as we support our
breastfeeding families.

Respectfully
Lisa Jones RN IBCLC
