I just thought I'd update everyone on the situation where an NP in an
affiliated children's hospital, who calls herself an LC but has no
certification at all, took issue about my suggesting galactogogues to a
mother I worked with (once only) when said nurse was not there. I sent
copies of all the latest info I have, including the most recent Lawrence
reference, Tom Hale's reference in his book and an internet article by an FP
doctor and assured her I would refrain from doing this in the futurein their
facility. I will actually refrain from doing anything with patients over
there, as this woman's husband is a power-wielding neonatologist there and I
have enough to do here!.

The same day I sent these references to her, I got the "article" she
referred to by Dr. Lawrence. It was a newspaper article! Of all things. I
sent her references and all she had was a short little 2 paragraph-one
column newspaper article. Oh, and she included her 5 page resume, which
included the title Lactation Consultant without any validation, and cited
all the articles, videos and pamphlets she has done in her many years of
experience. Guess who many of the above items were done for and paid by?
M. J. and B.M. (same thing)! I had heard she and her husband were deep in
their pockets. How sad for the breastfeeding parents from all over our
state, whose sick babies are sent here and she is the support they get.

I don't knock years of experience as a claim for expertise, but based on
the calls I get from moms who delivered here and whose babies were sent
there, she has not significantly updated her information because they are
not getting accurate information or the help they need. As Barbara put it,
she is functionally illiterate in breastfeeding but tiger-like in defense of
her skills and her reputation, as evidenced by her 5 page resume sent in
lieu of a letter! Here's hoping for some positive communication (but I'm
not holding my breath...sigh...).

Marsha Glass in snowbound Indiana where my daughter just left for an
out-of-state ski trip when she could have stayed right here!
