Ever since the AAP SIDS statement came out, I have been thinking of the work of behavioral scientists in the 60's.

Some monkeys were raised with real mothers. They clung to their mothers and nursed and were well socialized when they reached adulthood.

Some monkeys were given a wire cage covered in cloth which they clung to and were poorly socialized. Other monkeys were given a plain wire cage which they clung to as a mother-substitute. They could not be kept with other adult monkeys when they grew up.

Perhaps someone with a better memory than mine can describe these scenarios more fully. My memory gives me a pitiful image of a poor little baby monkey clinging to a wire cage and sucking desparately on a pacifier. And I wonder what we're doing to our children.

Some day we will have Robot Mommy, she will do everything for the baby.
