I'm interested in this also. How do BFHI hosp staff handle the mandated PKU
tests; the 'group exams' if you are a teaching hospital, etc.? I know I
have to leave the nursery when the RNs have to keep squeezing baby's heel
or hand repeatedly and VERY hard, all the while telling me that it doesn't
hurt baby, that baby just doesn't like having his foot/hand held so
tightly! What I'm hearing is tortured screaming from baby and I'm outta
there!

We also don't "allow" mom & baby to sleep together in mom's bed. If she
falls asleep, baby is removed to the crib. I'm told that several babies
have fallen out of mom's bed onto the floor in the last 10 years because
mom fell asleep. I can understand in obvious situations: mom still on
strong meds, still hooked up with IV & foley, & otherwise still sick. But
if she's experienced, healthy & well, not hooked up, not obese, & using
reasonable safety precautions, I don't see a problem. Do BFHI hospitals
"allow" baby to sleep in mom's bed at any time?

BTW: with 800/mo & 9000/yr, how many IBCLCs do you have on staff? Not
enough, I'm sure. I don't know of any hospital that really does have enough.

Thanks.
Phyllis
