first off, I really doubt that the "obese" baby is
obese- I suspect she is a healthy, fat, breastfed
baby. I really doubt that she has a pathological
state- anecdotally, all my kids were born on the small
side- biggest was 7 lbs, 11 oz- but fattened up
nicely. a neighbor who had been sabotaged in
breastfeeding her daughters 50 years prior used to
watch my eldest and say, "is it ok that she's that
fat?"- conversationally, not critically. My dd is a
lean, muscular 9 yo now- My cousins have children
with the same growth curve, but my bottle feeding
sister's son had a different curve.

Here's a reason I came across yesterday as to *why*
human babies are fat- according to the Aquatic Ape
Theory, they're fat because they need to float in the
water around their mothers! :-P It's hard to sift
through the science and psuedoscience on this in a
mere 24 hours, and some of the theories based on our
breast shape are flawed- Elaine Morgan thinks that the
proto-human got out of the water to feed the baby and
sat on the beach so she needed a ventral vagina and a
cushy bottom to sit on- she'd be more believable if
she had somehow manipulated the baby onto the breast
in the water since we know that humans and presumably
proto-humans nursed often.

here are two opposing links on the AAT (aquatic ape
theory) http://www.primitivism.com/aquatic-ape.htm
