Connecticut is too far away I am afriad - but I WOULD love to set up a
practice such as you describe in Dallas Texas! I am working towards my
Family NP and plan to sit for the IBCLC next summer. Your practice sounds
like a dream come true! I hope I can find or create such a situation when I
am done with school. If you hear of anyone else in the Dallas area who would
be interested, let me know.

Subject: Wanted: nurse practitioner or doc for breastfeeding practice in
Connecticut

Hi, all, I checked with Kathleen Bruce first, to be sure it was ok to post
what amounts to a classified ad: This list is where I got started, and so
this is where I'm hoping to find someone reading these pages who has been
hankering for a fulltime (or parttime) position in a practice devoted
exclusively to breastfeeding medicine. This is a search for a professional
position in our practice. If you're not interested, before you move on to
the next email, please do think of friends or colleagues not on this list
who might be interested. The practice: Breastfeeding Resources is a small
private specialty practice in Stratford Connecticut, which I started eight
years ago. The space: We have three "exam rooms" each decked out with floral
homey type furniture, a glider and/or loveseat, a sink, an electronic scale,
etc., We also have several staff rooms, including a "kitchen" where we have
a washer/dryer to do all our towels and pillowcases, reception/waiting room,
and a "living room" where we do classes, play with slings, have a mother's
group lunch every Wednesday, and have drop in visits. Our patients: We
currently see about 750 new dyads each year. They come primarily from our
own and surrounding counties, but also from anywhere in Connecticut, from
New York, and Massachusetts. They are a good cross section of folks,
including a good chunk of them who are that 30 year and up motivated and
educated. The vast majority of our visits are paid by insurance, public or
private. Our staff: We, who serve these families, are currently ten women:
six clinical and four support, four of us fulltime or nearly so, and six of
us halftime or less. Clinical staff: We are two docs, two nurse
practitioners, and two lactation consultants. Actually five of us are IBCLC,
the sixth is taking the boards this year. Both LCs and both NPs are also
LLLleaders, and one of our receptionists is also a LLLleader. One of our NPs
is extremely parttime, being our "research person," a half day a week,
working mostly on faculty at a nearby university. One MD/IBCLC is just
returning a couple days a month from maternity leave, one RN/IBCLC is soon
to be going on extended maternity leave. We are having trouble keeping up
with the increasing volume of patients referred to us. Right now we are
trying to see about ten dyads a day, and answer phone messages from another
twenty or thirty.moms a day. We need help. Who we are looking for: We are
very specifically looking for a nurse practitioner or doctor, who is either
already IBCLC, or, who already has enough lactation experience that, after
another year (with us) of mother-baby dyads under her belt, will be
qualified to sit for the IBLCE boards next year (and/or, if physician,
qualified for Fellowship in the Academy of BF Med.) Must already live in
Connecticut or be prepared to relocate quickly. We really need someone
yesterday. We would prefer fulltime, but will be happy to consider a
parrtime or shared position. We are a relaxed and easy going bunch, get
along well (with all that oxytocin flowing all the time!), and look for that
in future staffmembers. In the absence of an extensive literature about
breastfeeding management, we have to keep learning from the babies and the
mothers, so we look for people who are inquisitive, reflective, and
analytical, and yet totally able to engage their own right brains, and
connect with the families they support.
Replies: Please don't reply to the list, as I am set to NOMAIL. Instead,
please send an email reply to: Christina Smillie [log in to unmask] Include a
CV or resume if you have one readily available electronically, but a
personal letter about yourself is most important. Thanks, Tina Smillie
