Well, I just saw that the little guy was trying so hard, but could not
maintain suction...and I thought of trying the shield because of the fact it
helps preemies maintain suction, I guess.  I am not sure why it helped...but
I assume it acts to help create a seal.

The update so far is that he was having trouble gaining weight, but now mom
is nursing him for about 5 minutes (through her first let-down) and feeding
him hindmilk via Haberman, and he gained 3 ounces in the last 24 hours. (She
is able to pump 5-6 oz per feeding!!! at <2 weeks)  Once we are all
comfortable he is gaining we will play with his time at the breast.  I
wonder about trying a SNS underneath the sheild...but I didn't want to throw
too much at this mom all at once.
