I've speculated that the edema somehow interfers with prolactin receptors,
so I was intreigued at the idea that pitocin augmented deliveries might
cause upregulation of oxytocin.

Barbara, I'm still trying to get all the connections together here in my
mind- but I do know that the stretching of the perineum upregulates
prolactin receptors. could there be some override to that caused by edema?
are you referring specifically to edema caused by IV's and pitocin in labor?
I would think that pitocin would be overwhelming all of the oxytocin
receptors and could easily cycle back to prl.

This upregulation is my "first principles" reason for opposing episiotomies.

we have SSRI's- maybe we should consider SPrlRI- selective Prolactin
Receptor uptake Inhibitors...
