I have been so glad to see the topic of nipple
shields. At my last job, the lactation educator
decreed ,after going to a 5 day certification class,
that shields would be completely outlawed! No amount
of evidence presented by me would convince our nurse
manager this was a narrow view. I, as an IBCLC
certified consultant , could not even obtain one.
I left this position when I felt I could not function
to the best of my convictions.
I am now in a position that also presents some
difficulties. The first is that any baby that is
"spitty" is subjected to gastric lavage. I have
informed people that I do not agree with this and have
not done it in all my practice. Does anyone have any
research to back me up? Do other hospitals do this?
The other problem I have is practically every mother
recieves shells. Which is the lesser of the evils for
non latching infants and flattish nipples, shield or
shells?

Thanks for your help,
Barbara Arthur RNC,IBCLC
