"How do we know these babies weren't already dead, and *that's* why they didn't respond normally to overlying?"

"Breastfeeding is protective of SIDS but nothing is guaranteed and some breastfed babies do still die of SIDS whether in a crib or in a bed with mom."

Or even while Mom carries the baby in a sling... A mother I know was carrying her 6 month old breastfed daughter to her car in the sling after just having nursed and changed her. About 30 minutes later, when she took the baby out of the sling to put her into the car seat, the baby was lifeless. Such a tragedy! The mother took great solace in the thought that her baby died right next to her heart, never suffering or making a sound! Had that happened at night, they might certainly have called it overlying.
