Dear Lacnetters,

I've been reading the posts on pre-surgery fasting with interest. Could you
please share with me the risks of breastmilk should it be aspirated. I
thought I read somewhere when I first became an LLL leader (apx 8yrs ago)
that the concern anasthesiologists had was aspiration of food. Formula
would cause infection if aspirated. However, I thought that since
breastmilk was quickly digested any small amount remaining would not cause
infection if aspirated as it is a living fluid and it's antibacterial
properties would prevent infection. I've been retired for a few years now
and haven't kept up on the literature. I wonder in the case of a surgery
not involving the bowel or GI tract if it is still necessary for a breastfed
baby to fast. If so what is the difference in fasting time between a
breastfed & a formula fed baby.

Thanks
