I also wanted to add that sometimes it becomes more difficult to clip a
tight frenulum as the baby gets older, as in my son. At birth I noticed he
had a tight frenulum and asked the doctor to clip it when he did the
circumcision. He was unable to do it (personally I don't think he tried
very hard). So I was sent home with a baby who was a very noisy nurser and
my nipples became very tender. At 2 weeks I asked the MD to clip it again
and he said he didn't need to because the baby was gaining fine. I can
tell you if I hadn't nursed 3 children prior to my son so I knew it
shouldn't feel this way I would have quit. He consented to try with my
help and at 2 weeks we tried, but when my son cried he roled his tongue up
in his mouth so you couldn't get his frenulum, plus he cried with his gums
almost compressed. He suggested I go to the ENT who said he would put my
son under general anesthesia if he were to do it. Well I knew that was a
bad idea. So at 6 weeks my husband and I, with a cleaned manicure scissors
waited until he had nursed himself to sleep, with an open, relaxed mouth we
clipped his tongue. He awakened immediately, and I put him to my breast
and he suckled well. I could tell the difference immediately.
Barb, RN, IBCLC my son is almost 3 and tells me almost every day
that "nipples are the BEST."
