Yesterday, driving the kids home from school, Alex asked me to tell him a
story about when he was a baby. So I started talking about how I used to
take him to my office on Mondays, when I had office hours, and he would
nurse or sleep, or just sit in his infant seat, while I worked and met with
students. He said "Mother, it isn't *appropriate* to be having your breasts
hang out in front of other people." Well, as you'all can probably imagine,
I almost drove off the road right there and then. Boy did he get an earful,
about how if was just fine for mothers to feed their children wherever they
happened to be, and how it was even protected by law in the state of Texas.
If even *my* child picks this stuff up in kindergarten, and can be saying
something like this even though it was only a few short months ago that he
himself was still nursing, and even though he hear's plenty of talk about
breastfeeding and sees plenty of children nursing......We have a long road
to travel.
