I am writing mostly as a rant. I had a mom come to see on Friday because
her 8 month old abruptly "weaned" 6 days prior. As i took the history
the mom mentions the baby had been biting her so she baby's nose till
she would let go. when this failed to work she flicked the baby in the
lip when she bit, well the little girl only nursed on time after that
and only for a second. now the gets in the position but when she sees
the breast she arches away and screams.
The mom and i had a nice discussion on nursing strikes and what i saw as
the baby's response to the mom flicking her, we talked about co-bathing
and non pressure nursing opportunities and trying to nurse her in her sleep.
We also discussed how important it was for her daughter to regain her
comfort in nursing and also in her mother and how she may be a very
sensitive child.
well, i called her today, because she failed to call me. And she said
she had quit, they tried the bathing thing once and it didnt work and
she just didnt have the time to deal with it.
If you could just see the sorrow and fear in that baby's eyes it just
broke my heart. I wonder if she will go on to nurse her babies, i wonder
if she will reconnect with her mother.
When i was hanging up with the mom she apologized to me, i told her i
was there to offer support and information, and her choice wasnt about
me, it was her choice for her and her daughter and she needed to chose
what was best for them.
but ladies i must tell you i hung up that phone and cried, those sad
little brown eyes haunt me.
i dont know what else i could have said or done to make the mom see the
importance of not letting the nursing strike be her weaning.
