If a child who nurses about 6 times a day has strep throat and is being
treated with a penicillin elixir, should the mother also be treated
with antibiotic even though she doesn't have strep throat? Would it be
acceptable just to lightly coat her nipples with the penicillin elixir
3-4 times a day so as not to reinfect the child? Or is re-infection of
the child not a concern because the child is receiving antibiotic?

Marcella Snow, BSN, RN, IBCLC
